If I have a connecting flight in the US, will I have to go through US immigration?

Do you still have to pass through immigration if you’re not actually leaving the airport but just passing through?
That’s incredible. I live on a Caribbean island and I’m not allowed to enter the US because I had previously overstayed on a visa. All the other countries I want to visit have connecting flights in the US, so basically the US are saying that, as well as not being allowed back in there, I’m not allowed to travel anywhere else either. Jeez.
